# Appearance and shortcuts

This page is for the person who writes the notes. It covers the theme, the
light and dark choice, and the keyboard.

## Light, dark, and system

Open **Settings** from the **More actions** menu in the header. The
**Appearance** card offers **System**, **Light**, and **Dark**. System follows
your device.

The **Theme** item in the header menu cycles the same three choices, so you can
change it without leaving the note.

## Themes

The **Appearance** card also lists the theme families, each with a swatch that
shows how it will look in your current appearance. A family carries a light
variant and a dark variant where the palette has both, so your light and dark
choice keeps the same family.

A theme change applies at once on this device and is sent to your account in
the background, so your other browsers follow it.

To use colours of your own, import a theme file. See
[Your own theme](https://docs.tidynotebook.com/custom-themes.md).

## Offline storage

The **Available offline** card decides what else is kept on this device besides
the note text, which is always kept. Two checkboxes control images and older
versions. Both use more space, so turn them off on a device with little room.

## Keyboard shortcuts

Select **Keyboard shortcuts** in the header menu, or open the command palette
and select **Show keyboard shortcuts**. The dialog lists every combination and
what it does, written for both Windows and Mac keyboards. It is built from the
same table the application binds its keys from, so it is always current.

Three keys are worth knowing before you open it.

- **Ctrl + P** or **Cmd + P** opens the command palette, which searches your
notes and runs the common actions.
- **Ctrl + K** or **Cmd + K** inserts a link in the note.
- **Ctrl + S** or **Cmd + S** saves.
- **Ctrl + F** or **Cmd + F** finds text inside the note you have open.

## Installing the application

The application ships a web manifest, so a browser that supports installed web
applications offers its own install control, usually in the address bar. There
is no install button inside the application.
