# Trash

This page is for the person who writes the notes. It explains what happens to a
note you delete.

## Delete a note

Open the note menu in the header and select **Move to Trash**. You return to
the note list and a bar says the note moved to Trash. The bar offers **Restore**
for a few seconds and then goes away by itself. The note stays in Trash either
way.

## The Trash screen

Select **Trash** at the bottom of the sidebar. Each row gives the note name,
the folder it came from, and when it was deleted. A row that has not reached
your server yet is marked "waiting to go up".

Two actions sit on every row.

- **Restore** puts the note back where it was and opens it. Its whole history
  comes back with it.
- **Delete** shows a tick and a cross. Select the tick to remove the note and
every version of it for good. Select the cross to keep the note in Trash.
Delete also releases images that no other note uses. You cannot undo this
action, and it needs a connection.

Select **Clear all** at the top to delete all notes in Trash. Select the tick
to continue or the cross to keep the notes.

## What Trash does not do

There is no automatic cleanup. A note stays in Trash until you restore it or
delete it. Nothing expires.

A note you delete while offline appears in the same list and reaches your
server when the connection returns.

## If you need an older copy instead

A note that is still in your list keeps every saved version. Use
[History](https://docs.tidynotebook.com/saving-and-history.md) rather than Trash to go back to earlier text.
